Trekking and birdwatching in the Volcanoes Route

You will travel across one of the most beautiful regions and of the most appropriate for ecotourism in Chile. You will find 1.500-year-old trees, old craters, radiant volcanic lakes with clear water, rivers, waterfalls, glaciers and lava rivers that form part of this natural paradise.

This zone offers an infinite variety of landscapes that hosts a huge number of animal species that adorn and regulate these ecosystems : the White-throated Treerunner (Pygarrhichas albogularis), the Chucao Huet-Huet (Scelorchilus rubecula), the Black-throated Huet-Huet (Pteroptochos tarnii), the Thorn-Tailed Rayadito (Apharastura spinicauda], the Des mur's wiretail (Sylviorthorynchus desmursii), the impressive Magellanic Woodpecker (Campephilus magellanicus) and the agreeable and noisy Slender-billed Parakeet (Enicognathus leptorhynchus). There are also mammals such as the Culpeo Fox (Pseudalopex culpaeus) and the Chilla Fox (Pseudalopex griseus), la Chilean bobcat (Felis guina) and the marvelous puma (Felis concolor).

Itinerary

Day 1: We will meet at the Temuco bus station, then head to the city of Pucon. Once installed in comfortable cabins, we will visit the volcanic caves.  After lunch we will go over el Cañi Natural Sanctuary, a private reserve of 500 hectares, with primary forests of coigue, lenga and monkey puzzle trees.  There we can watch the 4 volcanoes of the area : Villarrica, Quetrupillán, Lanín, and Llaima.

Day 2: Excursion to the Villarrica National Park.  We will go over different places in the park, starting with Quetrupillan volcano and then the Puesco area where we will be at the Llaima volcano foothills.  We'll visit beautiful lagoons like Huefiuca and Queillehue lake, besides imponent waterfalls like La China and El Leon.

Day 3: Huerquehue National Park.  This day we'll visit this magnificent park walking among mañíos, coigües and impressive waterfalls and you will discover one of the more impressive groups of lakes of Chile. At night, we will lodge in Pucón as usual.
 

Day 4: Early in the morning we will head to Conguillio National Park.  After a good lunch in Melipeuco, we will enter the Park, visiting the Truful-Truful falls, the lago Verde y la Arco Iris lagoon. In the evening we will lodge in the cabins inside the Park.

Day 5: We will leave early in the morning to the “Sendero los Carpinteros” a beautiful pathway among ancient araucarias. We will finish our walk in the Captren Lagoon, a beautiful lagoon well suited for birdwatching. In the afternoon, we will go back to the cabins for a good lunch. After lunch, we will navigate through the beautiful Conguillio Lake. We will spend the night in the cabins.

Day 6: Last day of the trip.  We will hike the Sierra Nevada trail up to the eternal glaciers.  From this point we have the best panoramic view of the lake and the Llaima volcano, besides watching the majestic flight of the Condor.  After lunch we will return to Temuco.
